What is Lent?
In terms of time, Lent focuses us on the life of Jesus leading to his death and resurrection. In terms of the Christian life, Lent is a journey of recalibrating our hearts. Because Jesus’ death and resurrection are the paradigm and pattern for the Christian life (Rom. 6:1-11; Matt. 16:24-28), we take time during Lent to think about our sin that would lead us to death and our repentance that leads us to the life that is found in Jesus. It is a time of turning from those false “saviors” that give us false promises of joy and rest, and turning instead to the true Savior who alone can give us true joy and abundant life (John 10:10). For more on the history and meaning of Lent, I would encourage you to read the article by Trinity’s former pastor, Brandon Eggar, titled “A Journey Worth Considering.”
