A THOUGHT FROM YESTERDAY'S SERMON ON LUKE 7:1-17

We have been taught since we were little that Jesus loves us.  You know the song "Jesus Loves Me" right?  We've been hearing it since we were born. But sometimes being so familiar with this wonderful truth causes us to forget 2 other equally important truths. First, we don't deserve God's love.  Remember our catechism? Every sin deserves the wrath and curse of God. So when we sing "Jesus loves me" we need to take time to remember what the centurion in this passage said, "I am not worthy for you (that is Jesus) to come under my roof." But Jesus chooses to love us and therefore chooses not only to come under our roof, but to make his home with us so that we might be changed and set free from the sins that deserve God's wrath and curse. But secondly, we can get so used to knowing Jesus loves ME, that we forget this truth is just as true for the other undeserving sinners around us. There is nothing special about ME that makes me deserving of God's love. When you see people who are hurting and lost, like the widow in the second part of this passage, are you asking Jesus how you can imitate Him by showing the mercy He has shown you? The children's choir is learning a song about this that they will be sharing with the congregation on December 3 to help direct our thinking as we begin the Advent season. HERE is a link to that song if you would like to learn it as a family at home and be prepared to join in the song. Think about this passage as you hear and sing the first 2 verses and then, as you listen to verse 3, ask yourself how your family is showing the love and mercy Jesus has shown to you.
