A THOUGHT FROM YESTERDAY'S SERMON
Do you know Jesus? Sometimes we think if we had lived back when Jesus did we would understand him and be able to follow him better. But what about the disciples? They were with Jesus for 3 years and did not really know him. They completely misunderstood what he was doing. How do you think they could spend all that time with him and not realize who he really was? The story in Luke 24:13-35 helps us understand how people today and, even the disciples who were with Jesus, could misunderstand who He is.
The two disciples in this passage, who had been Jesus' friends, didn't recognize Jesus as He was walking with them on the road. They missed him completely until two things happened: They heard him explain The Story and they watched him break the bread and serve.
You see, just like the disciples, we can be doing lots of good things - coming to church, following laws, being angry about things that are wrong and wanting to make them right - but until we recognize Jesus IN the Story of Scripture and IN the Meal He gave, all that knowledge will not change our life. Do you know Jesus? Are you listening to Jesus and seeing him in the stories of Scripture? Are you seeing him in the bread and wine at the meal he gave? You will know the answer to these questions if your life and words are telling others the Story of your Servant King.
